Bird & Bird has announced the appointment of IP specialist James Luo as partner to head up the Asian IP enforcement practice in Beijing. Luo joins from Motorola, where he was Senior IP Counsel. He is vice chairman of the Quality Brands Protection Committee, and has led some of their leading design patent and anti-monopoly law lobbying projects. Luo has extensive experience in all types of contentious and non-contentious IP work as well as handling lobbying efforts with law makers and IP enforcement authorities and negotiation of royalty licences with Chinese multinationals.

Capital markets lawyer Rahul Guptan has joined Clifford Chance from Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co International. Guptan graduated from the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, India and was admitted to the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa. He joined Amarchand & Mangaldas & Suresh A Shroff & Co Mumbai in 1999, was appointed partner in April 2006 and headed the firm’s capital markets practice. Guptan will be based in the firm’s Singapore office.

Charmian Barton has joined DLA Phillips Fox as a partner in its Sydney office. Barton joins DLA Phillips Fox from Cutler, Hughes & Harris. She advises on all aspects of environmental law and has significant experience in contaminated land management, pollution control, biodiversity, heritage and environmental impact assessment. Her past experience includes managing a portfolio of contaminated sites for an international oil company, providing advice on the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act for major health care providers and conducting environmental due diligence in commercial transactions and land acquisitions.

Owen Chan has joined Lovells Hong Kong as partner in the firm’s banking team. Previously a partner at Stephenson Harwood & Lo, Chan, who is a native Mandarin speaker, advises a range of financial institutions and investment intermediaries on structured finance involving lending and security issues in Hong Kong and China, including acquisition finance and PRC banking regulatory advice, to financial institutions and investment intermediaries with interests in the mainland. Chan has been recognised as a leading individual in both Hong Kong and China.
