Han Kun has added Michelle Gon and Sophie Shi as partners in the Shanghai office, effective March 31, 2021. Gon has more than 30 years of experience in the US and China, and is recognized as an expert in cross-border compliance and regulatory areas. She has extensive experience representing multinationals in complicated and challenging compliance and regulatory matters. She is familiar with Chinese legal practice and deeply experienced in advising on cross-border transactions involving China, the US and Europe. Gon is also skilled in advising on IP protection, acquisition, system establishment, trade secret protection, infringement defense strategies, and litigation negotiations. Before joining the firm, she practiced with Winston & Strawn as a partner, and held senior partner roles at two other international law firms. In addition, she served as chief legal officer of a China-based high-tech enterprise, and as in-house counsel for the international division of a US-based multinational company, which has investments across the globe. On the other hand, Shi focuses on compliance, general corporate, and regulatory and governmental affairs. She is experienced in dealing with both Chinese and international legal matters, and has handled many complex cases and significant projects in a variety of areas for both international and domestic clients.

King & Wood Mallesons has strengthened its cross-border finance capability with the appointment of banking and finance partner David Lam. He brings 18 years of cross-border finance experience, coupled with a deep understanding and connectivity with clients in Hong Kong and China. Fluent in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, Lam has built an effective practice focused on cross-border loan financing outbound from China, where he has advised lenders, sponsors and corporate borrowers on a wide range of financing transactions, with a particular focus on China-related transactions. Lam commenced his career at Clifford Chance, spending ten years with the firm, before joining KWM as a partner in Hong Kong for eight years, followed by joining Allen & Overy in 2019 as head of the China Desk (Australia).

Squire Patton Boggs has added Sydney corporate/M&A partner Michael Gajic. Formerly with MinterEllison, Gajic specialises in public M&A, and acts for bidders, targets and major shareholders on public M&A transactions, including schemes of arrangement, takeovers (hostile, unsolicited and friendly), takeover defences, take-privates of Australia-listed companies by private equity bidders, and Takeovers Panel matters. He has extensive experience advising on shareholder activism, having advised activist investors on campaigns, as well as advising Australia-listed companies on their responses to shareholder activism. Gajic acts for both buyers and sellers on Australian and cross-border private M&A transactions, including sales, acquisitions, divestments and strategic sale processes. He also advises on capital raisings, placements, block sales of stakes in Australia-listed companies, corporate restructures, recapitalisations and loan-to-own transactions.

Yoon & Yang has added Young Hyun Kim, a former chief prosecutor of the Foreign Criminal Affairs Department of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office; Su Yeol Lee, a former presiding judge at the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court; and Sang Jae Park, a former presiding judge of the Gwangju District Court, as partners. Kim joins the criminal defense practice group, after a life-long career as a prosecutor. Early on, he specialized in prosecutions of environmental crimes. Later, his focus shifted to special corporate investigation cases, which has become his core expertise. He is recognized as a leading expert in the financial and securities sectors, given his experiences with the Central Investigation Bureau of the Supreme Prosecutors’ Office and the joint investigation group examining the savings bank corruption case, and as legal advisor to the Financial Supervisory Service between 2011 and 2014. Thereafter, he worked as the head of the Securities Crime Joint Investigation Team, handling major financial crimes in Korea. He also gained work experience in foreign criminal matters, while serving as head of the Defense Industry Corruption Joint Investigation Team and of the Foreign Criminal Affairs Department of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. On the other hand, Lee and Park join the firm’s corporate litigation practice group. Lee has served as judge of the Seoul District Court, the Uijeongbu District Court and the Seoul Central District Court, and as the Director of Judicial Research of the Supreme Court Library, a presiding judge of the Ulsan District Court, a research judge of the Supreme Court, and most recently as a presiding judge of the Criminal Settlement Board at the Seongnam Branch of the Suwon District Court. A veteran in criminal and warrant cases, Park joins the firm after a 15-year career as a judge. He served on the bench of the Incheon District Court, the Seoul Central District Court, the Mokpo Branch of the Gwangju District Court, and the Goyang Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court. He worked as a research judge of the Supreme Court, and most recently as a presiding judge of the Gwangju District Court. During his time on the bench, he demonstrated exceptional faculty in criminal matters and warrant cases. Having reviewed the basic direction for handling criminal cases while working as a Research Judge in the General Criminal Research Team at the Supreme Court, he is known for his careful attitude and balanced perspective.
