| Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher has established its second office in Asia, as the firm ventures into the competitive legal market in Hong Kong. The new office, which will focus on corporate transactions and corporate compliance, regulation and investigations, will be anchored by Kelly Austin, who joins the firm as a partner. Austin most recently spent eight years in Hong Kong with General Electric International, where she advised on the implications of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other compliance matters across GE’s Asian business units. She will be joined in the office by partner Joseph Barbeau, who previously practiced in Hong Kong from 1985 to 1997 and is due to relocate from the firm’s Palo Alto office. During his twelve years in Hong Kong, Barbeau gained broad experience with foreign investment in China, cross-border mergers and acquisitions for Hong Kong and US companies, and representation of private equity and pooled investment funds across the region. The two partners will also be joined by associate Kate Yin from the firm’s Los Angeles office.
Having opened an office in Singapore in 2008, the firm has been looking for the right opportunity to enter the Hong Kong market for some time, and according to Chair and Managing Partner Ken Doran, the opportunity to bring Austin on board was key to the firm’s decision to open the new office. “Kelly’s extensive experience in designing and running a world-class compliance program, leading internal and government investigations, and driving compliance leadership across the region will be a tremendous asset for our clients,” he said, in commenting on the appointment. The new Hong Kong office will be located at Gloucester Tower in The Landmark, Central. |
