Leading corporate partner Gary McLean has relocated from London to join Allen & Overy’s Hong Kong office, where he will head the firm’s Corporate practice in the region. McLean, who has previously worked in the firm’s Hong Kong office as well as in its Amsterdam office, joined A&O in 1988, subsequently taking on a partnership role in 1996. He has more than 20 years of experience advising a wide range of domestic and international corporate clients, particularly on commercial matters including outsourcing transactions, joint ventures and corporate recovery work, and specialises in M&A, asset financing and outsourcing transactions in the financial sector.

King & Wood has strengthened its Shanghai practice with the addition of Meg Utterback, who has joined the firm as a senior member in its International Arbitration practice group. Utterback was previously a key partner in Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP’s China practice, also co-chairing that firm’s international arbitration practice, and she has over 19 years of dispute resolution and international arbitration experience, mostly concerning the construction and energy industries. She has also handled over 40 jury and bench trials in the US and has represented clients in complex arbitrations before tribunals worldwide, whilst regularly counseling clients on international construction and commercial disputes in China and abroad.

Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill has added industrial relations and employment law expert Dato’ Thavalingam Thavarajah as partner to the firm’s Employment practice group. Admitted to the Malaysian Bar in 1990, Thavarajah has served as a member of the Industrial Court Practice Committee of the Bar Council for a decade, and in 2008 was appointed to a two-year term on the National Labour Advisory Council. He is currently honorary secretary of the Malaysian Employers Federation, and has written extensively on Malaysian labor law topics, including writing Constructive Dismissal - Commentaries and Cases (2008) and co-authoring Retrenchment Law and Procedure in Malaysia (2009).

Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati has appointed Weiheng Chen as co-head of the firm’s China practice. Chen, who has taken on a partnership role in the firm’s Corporate and Securities practice, joins from Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy’s Hong Kong and Beijing offices, where he gained substantial experience in cross-border M&A, private equity investments, capital markets, and joint ventures. He has been involved in some of the most significant M&A and capital markets transactions involving Chinese companies in recent years, whilst also advising on many high-profile securities offerings, representing both issuers and underwriters, on the Hong Kong and New York stock exchanges. Prior to joining Milbank, Chen was an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell, starting in their New York office and moving to their Hong Kong office in 2003. He is a native Mandarin speaker and a graduate of Harvard Law School and Beijing University Law School.
