As ever, it was a lively and engaged Philippine in-house community that gathered at the Makati Shangri-la in mid-July for the third In-House Congress Manila.

Following a welcome from In-House Community director, Tim Gilkison, a panel discussion addressed the question: “The Biggest Challenges in my job are…?”, with a particular focus on “external counsel management, cost effectiveness and tried and trusted methods to enhance the reputation of the legal department”, with Jasmine Oporto, Senior Vice President, Chief Legal Officer and Compliance Officer at Aboitiz Equity Ventures; Jannet Cruz-Regalado, VP Legal & Managing Counsel Global Litigation Asia Pacific at Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation; Louie T. Ogsimer, partner at Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc & de los Angeles; Kyle Wombolt, Global Head of Corporate Crime & Investigations and partner in Hong Kong with Herbert Smith Freehills; and moderated by In-House Community co-director Patrick Dransfield.

There followed a day of interactive workshops, including: ‘Counsels in Crisis’ presented by security and investigations specialists from Pacific Strategies & Assessments; a ‘Global Anti-Corruption Update’ presented by Herbert Smith Freehills; and ‘The Top 5 Ways the Competition Law Affects your Deals and Dispute Resolution’, with a panel from Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc & de los Angeles and featuring valuable input from Commissioner Johannes Benjamin R. Bernabe, from the Philippine Competition Commission.

Thanks to all our speakers and co-hosts for making the Manila Congress such a worthwhile gathering.

“The Congress broadened my horizons and opened my eyes in regard to the issues and realities I [have to] confront in my career as an in-house counsel”
